Thursday Thirteen!


Thirteen People Who Signed the Declaration of Independence, along with a Cool Fact about Each of Them!



1. John Adams
Nominated George Washington commander-in-chief of the colonial armies.


2. Samuel Adams
Cousin to John Adams


3. Samuel Chase
Represented the state of Maryland at the Continental Congress


4. William Ellery
Graduated from Harvard at the age of fifteen.


5. Ben Franklin
Had no formal education above the age of ten, but was celebrated throughout Europe, welcomed in any Royal Court, sought out by every prestigious society, and respected wherever his name was known.


6. John Hancock
The first to sign the Declaration of Independence and also has the most recognizable signature.


7. Thomas Jefferson
Wrote the Declaration of Independence with some minor corrections from John Adams and an embellishment from Benjamin Franklin.


8. Thomas McKean
Served on the committee to draw up the Articles of Confederation and was commissioned a colonel in the New Jersey militia.


9. Edward Rutledge
Despite his avowed allegiance to the Federalist party, he voted for Thomas Jefferson for President.


10. Matthew Thornton
Born in Ireland.


11. William Whipple
He went off to sea to find his fortune and later established himself as a merchant.


12. John Witherspoon
President of the College of New Jersey, now Princeton.


13. Oliver Wolcott
Brigadier General of the Connecticut militia.

I've always been amazed by Ben Franklin. Very nice list.

One of my personal favorites - Charles Carroll, the signer for whom my alma mater was named. He was both a US and state senator, the only Catholic signer, and also the longest lived, dying at age 95.
