Thursday Thirteen!

Since my paranormal spanking romance The Magic Spell just came out in print, I thought I'd do Thirteen Mini Excerpts from it!

1.

With a laugh, Alanna dropped a generous handful of candy into each plastic pumpkin. But even as she did so, she couldn’t help but notice the man chaperoning them. Dressed as a pirate, he was not only well-built, but good looking, too, and she closed the door with a dreamy sigh as he and his little group wandered off to the next apartment.

“Well, he was certainly a hottie,” Hollie remarked as Alanna walked back over to where the other girls were still seated around the coffee table. “I mean, a married hottie with a minivan full of kids, obviously, but still definitely a hottie.”

“Mmmm,” Pamela smiled. “And he was dressed up as a pirate, too. What could be sexier than that?”

Alanna sighed again. “He was, wasn’t he?” she agreed, and then grinned suddenly as a thought occurred to her. “Maybe that’s what I should wish for. A real life, honest-to-goodness, big, strong, handsome pirate.”

Still smiling, she picked up the parchment and dropped it into the swirling mist without hesitation. She opened her mouth, all prepared to describe the ideal man that she had been thinking about right before the trick-or-treaters had come. But before she could get a word out, there was a flash of light and a poof of smoke from the cauldron. It made all of them jump, most especially Alanna, who stared at it in amazement.

2.

With a sigh, Alanna walked over to where the man lay, only to blink in surprise as she gazed down at him. Even lying down she could tell that he was tall, not to mention well-built. And absolutely gorgeous, she thought, taking in his dark hair, sensuous mouth, and angular jaw with its day’s worth of stubble. How could she possibly have missed a hottie like him at the party? she wondered.

Alanna continued to gaze down at him for a moment, taking in the muscular expanse of chest visible beneath his half-open shirt before moving on to the breeches and supple leather boots he was wearing. They looked expensive, she thought. Then again, so did the musket pistol and sword on his hip. Even safely tucked into the scabbard, it looked like the real thing.

Alanna let out another sigh. Regardless of how gorgeous he was, he had to go. Using the tip of her shoe, she gently nudged him in the side with her foot. When he didn’t move, she nudged him again, a little harder this time. But still, he didn’t stir. Her brow furrowed suddenly as a horrifying thought occurred to her. Oh God, she hoped that the guy had only passed out.

3.

For a moment, Alanna just stared at him in confusion. What the heck did he mean, where was he? Was he really that drunk, or just stupid? But watching as his eyes darted around the room, she decided that he must be drunk. He was looking at her apartment as if he’d never seen it before. Her mouth tightened. That was all she needed at this time of night, a guy so drunk that he couldn’t even remember coming to the party. How the heck was she going to get him out of there if he was that ripped? Slowly getting to her feet, she stood facing him, hands on her hips.

“Okay, I’m not sure why you didn’t leave with everyone else, but the party’s over,” she said. “So, you need to get your drunken butt out of here. I have to go to work in the morning.”

His brows drew together as he leveled that incredible gold gaze at her. “I will leave when you tell me what you have done to me, witch!” he growled. “Where am I, and how did I get here? Answer me, witch! What evil scheme have I fallen into?”

Alanna frowned. The guy certainly didn’t sound like he’d been drinking. He just sounded weird. Why was he still putting on that fake accent anyway? Like something out of an old pirate movie, she was sure it had been a hit during the party, but now, it just sounded ridiculous.

4.

“Look,” she said, taking a step closer and lifting her chin to glare up at him. “I’m sure the accent and the pirate lingo were a big hit with the girls at the party, but at this time of night, it just makes you sound stupid. Now get out before I call the cops.”

His eyes narrowed, taking in her curve-hugging gown and long, black hair with a sweep of his gaze. He made no move to go, however. Annoyed, Alanna began to gesture with her hands in a shooing motion toward the door.

“Go on, get out of here!” she told him.

The man stepped back quickly, his hand going to the hilt of his sword. “Trying to put another spell on me, are you, witch?” he said. “Well, you won’t catch me so unaware this time, I can promise you!”

Alanna shook her head. What a complete dumbass! she thought. Okay, so obviously he wasn’t drunk. But he must be high on something, she decided, because no one in their right mind would act like such a complete moron.

“Okay,” she said smartly. “You want a spell? Try this one then, C-O-P-”

She had this really cute line all ready about calling the cops, but apparently he wasn’t amused because he never let her get the words out. Quickly closed the distance between them, he pulled her close and swiftly brought a hand up to cover her mouth.

Alanna’s eyes went wide, her pulse skipping a beat. Oh crap, she thought. Could she have misread the whole situation? What if this guy were dangerous.

“I will not let you, or Morania, or any other witch bespell me again, is that understood?” he said softly. For a moment, Alanna could only stare up at him, her heart pounding. Yes, she had definitely misread the situation. This guy wasn’t drunk or high. He was nuts!

5.

Wishing she had finished those self-defense classes she’d started, she did the only thing she could think of. She jerked away from him and slapped him across the face as hard as she could.

Unfortunately, her blow didn’t have the desired effect. Actually, it had no effect at all. The man only blinked, probably more stunned that she’d had the audacity to slap him than from the actual slap itself. Jaw tight, he reached for his phony pirate sword and started to pull it from its scabbard.

What the heck was he doing? Alanna thought, taking a nervous step back. But then she froze in place, her eyes going wide as the light glinted off the blade. Oh God, she thought. It wasn’t a phony sword; it was real! For the first time, she had the inkling that she might be in real trouble.

Swearing under his breath, the man slammed the sword back home. “You might be a witch, but I have never drawn a blade on a woman, even one who has just struck me, and I am not about to start now,” he said, his golden brown eyes narrowing. “Nevertheless, you will tell me what I want to know!”

Before Alanna could even wonder what he meant by that, the man reached out and grabbed her by the arm. His grip like iron, he began to drag her across the room to the couch.

“Let go of me, you...” she began, only to let out a startled little “Oh!” of surprise when he sat down on the couch and yanked her over his knee.

For a moment, Alanna was so shocked that she couldn’t do more than lay there. She regained her senses quickly, however. Bracing her hands on his well-muscled thigh, she tried to push herself upright, but a strong hand on her back held her firmly in place.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” she demanded, craning her neck to look at him over her shoulder. “Let me up, you...Owwwww!”

Alanna’s eyes went wide as she felt his hand come down on her upturned bottom. He was spanking her! Just what the heck was going on here? First, he had grabbed her, then he had threatened her with his sword, and now, he was spanking her. Who the hell did he think he was, manhandling her like this? Crazy jerk! Too angry to even be the least bit scared of the guy now, she struggled to free herself.

“How dare you!” she cried, beating her fist against his leg as hard has she could. “Let me go right now!”

6.

“Tell me how to reverse this spell of yours so that I can leave this place! Confess, witch!”

Alanna bit her lip to stifle another yelp. “I’m not a witch, you crazy jerk!”

Perhaps calling him names while he had the upper hand in this situation was not the smartest thing she could do, Alanna thought, but she had to say something to get through that thick head of his.

“Do not lie to me!” he ordered, delivering another set of hard spanks to her poor ass. “Who else would dress in such garb, but a witch?”

What the heck was it with this guy and witches? “I’m not a witch, you idiot!” she shouted. “I’m only dressed like one for Halloween!”

God, could anyone really be that dense? she wondered. Alanna couldn’t believe she was actually trying to explain her choice of outfits to this psycho, but her bottom stung so fiercely that right then she would have done anything to get him to stop spanking her.

Abruptly, the spanking stopped, and Alanna gasped in relief. Her bottom felt like she’d just sat on a stove!

“Halloween,” the man muttered. “All Hallows’ Eve. Of course.”

Duh! Alanna wanted to say, but wisely kept her mouth shut. With his hand still firmly keeping her in place, she didn’t want to do anything that would make him start spanking her again. Now, if he would only let her up.

But apparently, he wasn’t ready to release her quite yet, so Alanna could do little but lay there draped over his lap with her head hanging down and her bottom up in the air.

“So, if you are not a witch, then that means you could not have brought me here,” the man said. “Which means that it must have been Morania’s doing. Of course, I should have known that!”

Alanna didn’t know anyone named Morania, but obviously the woman must have brought him to the party, and then dumped him. Alanna could understand why. The guy was a fruitcake! Apparently, the Johnny-Depp-wanna-be wasn’t handling getting dumped very well, though. He was going to need a psychiatrist by the time he was done.

Alanna craned her neck to glare at him over her shoulder. “Well, now that we’ve established that, why don’t you go take this up with her, and leave me the hell alone?” she told him.

His eyes narrowed at that, and for a moment, Alanna thought he might start spanking her again, but then his mouth quirked. “You may not be a witch, but you are a saucy wench, do you know that?” he said.

She opened her mouth to tell him that he was an arrogant jerk, only to let out a startled gasp in surprise when he unceremoniously shoved her off his lap and onto the floor.

Alanna stared up at him in astonishment, her bottom stinging from where it had smacked against the carpeted floor. Too proud to reach back and rub the sting from her asscheeks, though, she settled for glaring up at him instead.

He stood towering over her, his gold eyes raking her slender figure. “I will take you at your word, wench,” he said. “Now, tell me how to leave and I will be gone from this strange place.”
Thank God, she thought, and jerked her head in the direction of the door. “Most people just use the door, dummy!”

He frowned at her, and for a moment, she half expected him to put her over his knee again. But instead, he turned and strode across the room to the door. He fumbled with the locks for a minute before finally yanking it open, then looked at her for a moment before turning to walk out the door. But he only took a step before he jerked back as if he had just slammed into a wall. Stunned, he stood there for a moment, staring into the empty hallway.

Hesitantly, he tried to take another step, but the same thing happened. Reaching out with his hand, he thumped the space where the door had been. Amazingly, his fist made an audible sound as if he was actually striking a solid wall instead of air.

Alanna got to her feet, her brow furrowing in outright irritation. This guy was too much! The spanking had been bad enough, but now he was acting like a mime, too? If her bottom didn’t sting so much, she probably would have laughed. Standing there rubbing her sore asscheeks, she wondered how the night could get any more bizarre.

7.

All at once, the spanking stopped, and Alanna caught her breath. Her ass felt like it was on fire! She imagined that beneath her dress her bottom must be the color of a fire engine.

“Are you finally ready to tell me what I want to know?” he asked, still holding her firmly in place.

Alanna was too focused on her throbbing bottom to reply immediately, and when she didn’t, the man swore softly.

“So, you still refuse to answer?” he said. “Then it is time I showed you that I am serious, witch.”

Alanna’s brow furrowed. What the heck was he talking about? she wondered. But she found out soon enough when she felt a cool breeze on her bare bottom. Her eyes went wide. The jerk had pushed up her dress!

Red-faced with embarrassment, Alanna opened her mouth to protest, but his sharp intake of breath stopped her.

“What in the name of all that is holy are you wearing, wench?”

Forgetting her embarrassment for the moment, Alanna craned her neck to look over her shoulder to see him staring at her ass in wide-eyed astonishment. Hadn’t he ever seen a woman wear a thong before?

“You are a brazen wench, aren’t you?” he said.

8.

Alanna felt her pulse quicken as she remembered the magic spell she and her friends had done earlier that evening. The words from the woman at the charm shop came back to her then. Be careful what you ask for, my dear. It is Halloween, after all.

That couldn’t be it, she thought. But what other explanation could there be? Alanna almost groaned as she thought back to what she’d said as she had tossed the parchment into the swirling cauldron. She had said she wanted a real life, honest-to-goodness pirate! Could she have possibly gotten exactly what she’d asked for?

Her gaze went to the man seated at the table and she studied him carefully. With those ruggedly handsome features and authentic clothes, he really did look like an actual pirate, she thought. She could just imagine him standing on the deck of some ship, giving orders in that deep, sexy, commanding voice of his.

Alanna did groan then. She read way too many romance books! This wasn’t some story. If she were right, and he was a real pirate, then she was screwed. What the heck was she going to do with a sword-toting pirate, especially one who was bound to her like a dog on a leash?

9.

Satisfied that Garren understood how to use the facilities, Alanna closed the bathroom door and went across the hall to the guest room. Hollie was just pulling back the blanket on the bed and she looked up at Alanna’s entrance.

“Is it safe to leave him alone in there?” the redhead asked.

Alanna nodded. “I don’t think he can do too much damage,” she said. “Though he wasn’t too sure about the shower.”

Her friend’s eyes suddenly lit up. “Maybe I should go in and help him out with that.”

Though it made absolutely no sense at all, Alanna felt a stab of jealousy at her friend’s words. “Hollie!”

The other girl shrugged. “I’m just saying.”

Alanna frowned. “Well, don’t,” she said. “Good night.”

But between Hollie’s suggestive comment and the sound of the water running, the image of the gorgeous six-foot-four male specimen taking a shower in her bathroom was all Alanna could think about as she went into her own room. Good Lord, what was she thinking? The man was a pirate, for heaven’s sake! Not exactly boyfriend material!

10.

“You can send him back, though, right?” Alanna asked.

Mijanou regarded her in silence for a moment before answering. “If that is what you both want by the time I figure out how to do so, then yes.”

What did she mean, if that was what they both wanted? Alanna wondered. Of course, it was!

“What about the part of the spell that won’t let us get more than twenty feet from each other?” Alanna persisted. “Can you do something about that right now?”

The woman’s lips curved into a smile. “I am afraid not, my dear,” she said. “For now, you will have to learn to enjoy each other’s company.”

Alanna wanted to groan. What the heck was she going to do with a seventeenth-century pirate while the shop owner came up with a spell to send him back? It’s not like she could take him to work with her.

11.

Back outside, Hollie suggested they stop at Starbuck’s on the way back to the car, and as they walked down the sidewalk past the various shops, Alanna felt an abrupt yank as Garren stopped to look in one of them. At the limit of their twenty-feet tether, she stumbled a little and turned to see what had captured his interest this time.

“Bloody hell!” he muttered, his expression dark as he stared at something in the store window.

“What is it?” Alanna asked.

He gave her a sidelong glance. “That is mine.”

Her brow furrowing in confusion, Alanna looked up to read the sign above the store. Grayson’s Antiques, it read. “What are you talking about?” she asked Garren.

He pointed at the ornate looking box one of the shelves. “That is mine,” he said. “I had it made for me in Port Royale. See, it has my initials worked into it in silver.”

She leaned closer for a better look. It was very nice looking, but she couldn’t imagine what the heck he would want with it. It looked like a jewelry box to her. “Well, it belongs to Grayson’s Antiques now,” she said. “So, come on.”

Without waiting to see if he would follow, Alanna turned to go and was immediately jerked back. Muttering under her breath, she whirled around to find the pirate determinedly trying to make his way to the door of the antique store.

“Just what do you think you’re doing?” Alanna demanded, digging the heels of her boots into the sidewalk.

He gave her a superior look. “I am going to get my property back.”

She glared at him. “I’m not paying good money for some old piece of junk,” she told him firmly.

His mouth quirked. “Who said anything about paying for it?”

Turning on his heel, Garren started for the antique store again, but Alanna grabbed onto the parking meter with one hand, refusing to budge. Eyes narrowing, he spun around to face her.
“Stop this foolishness, wench, and let me go in there,” he growled.

Alanna lifted her chin. “I will not let you go in there and steal that thing back,” she told him firmly.

He clenched his jaw. “Why not?” he demanded. “It is mine.”

“Not in this century it isn’t!” she shot back.

Garren stood there scowling at her for so long that for a moment Alanna thought he might actually pick her up, throw her over his shoulder, and carry her bodily into Grayson’s Antiques. But he only swore under his breath, gave the thing in the store a regretful look and strode over to her.

“You are lucky I do not put you over my knee right here, wench,” he told her as he stalked past. “I thought you would have learned your lesson the first two times I did so, but apparently you did not.”

Hollie, who had been watching the whole exchange with amusement, now looked at her wide-eyed. “Did he just say what I think he did?” she asked.

Alanna’s face flamed. “Of course not!” With that, she hurried past the other girl to catch up with Garren before her friend could press her on the subject. She only hoped Garren wouldn’t say anything else about it. It was bad enough that she knew she’d been spanked. It would be completely mortifying if Hollie found out about it. The other girl would never let it go.

12.

As Garren methodically continued applying his hand to both cheeks, she swore she could feel the heat rising from her ass. If she could look over her shoulder and see her bottom, she wouldn’t be surprised to see smoke rising!

“Garren, please!” she begged again, trying to put as much remorse in her words as she could muster. “I really am sorry!”

At her words, Garren halted, his hand poised just above her throbbing ass. “What exactly are you sorry for?” he asked. “Are you sorry for being such an ungrateful wench?”

Alanna gritted her teeth at being called wench, but draped over his knee with her bottom so hot that it felt like it was on fire, she didn’t think it was the best time to get into an argument with him about it. So, instead, she nodded.

“I did not hear you,” he said. “What did you say?”

She made a face, but answered. “Yes!” she said. “I’m sorry for being an ungrateful wench!”
Alanna wasn’t really sorry, but at that moment, she thought she probably would have said anything to get him to stop spanking her. But she had said it, and Garren would let her up now.

Garren didn’t release her, though. Instead, he leaned forward again. “And are you sorry for calling me an arrogant jerk?”

She was stunned. She couldn’t believe he had really just asked her that. “No, because you are an arrogant jerk!” she snapped, the words coming out before she could stop herself.

“Have it your way, then,” he told her.

Alanna would have sworn that she could almost hear amusement in his voice as he said the words, but before she could look over her shoulder at him to see if he really were laughing at her, he began to spank her again.

He only got in another half a dozen smacks before she gave in. “Okay, okay!” she told him. “I’m sorry I called you an arrogant jerk!”

“See?” he said, his hand resting on her throbbing bottom. “Now was that so difficult?”

To her relief, he didn’t wait for a reply, but lifted her to her feet. As much as Alanna wanted to turn and run into her bedroom, something in her refused to allow Garren to have the last word. Reaching back to rub her stinging asscheeks with one hand as she turned to face him, she glared up into his handsome face.

“You might think you’re all that, Captain Dandridge, but...”

But the rest of her insult was lost as Garren cupped her face between his hands and bent his head to cover her mouth with his.

For a moment, Alanna was so startled that she didn’t do anything but stand there and let Garren kiss her. Recovering quickly, though, she placed her hands on his chest to push him away. Her body, however, refused to obey. Instead, she found herself returning his kiss with a passion that surprised her. What was she doing? He was a complete brute, no better than her ex-boyfriend. Then why was she still kissing him?

Because she had been wanting him to kiss her like this since the first time he had spanked her!

13.

As she lay there draped over him, Alanna could feel Garren’s heart beating in time with hers. Though he was breathing just as hard as she was, she noticed he didn’t release his firm grip on her bottom, and that was just fine with her.

A smile curved Alanna’s lips. She’d just had the best sex of her life. And at the hands of a seventeenth-century pirate who was obsessed with spanking her, no less.

The Magic Spell is now in Print!

I'm thrilled to announce that my bestselling paranormal spanking romance The Magic Spell is now in print!

Synopsis

Alanna Simms has been having a problem finding Mr. Right. But when she and her friends stumble across a charm shop just in time for Halloween, her friends think they have found the solution to her problem. When the mysterious proprietor overhears Alanna complaining about how hard it is to find a good man, the woman gives her a potion that she claims will give Alanna her heart’s desire.Of course, Alanna doesn’t believe in magic, but at the urging of her friends, goes along with the whole thing anyway.

But Alanna is unprepared when she finds a stranger dressed as a pirate passed out on her living room floor hours after doing the magic spell. Thinking that he’s just a hunk that she must have missed at the costume party they had, she is shocked to discover that he is actually the seventeenth-century pirate she jokingly asked for when invoking the spell.

Considering how gorgeous he is, that wouldn’t be half bad, if it weren’t for two very annoying problems. One, they can’t get more than twenty feet apart from each other. And two, the sexy pirate seems to think he can put her over his knee and spank her any time he wants to.

How can this arrogant jerk possibly be her heart’s desire? Alanna wonders. That woman at the charm shop must have made a terrible mistake because Garren Dandridge couldn’t be the right man for her. Could he?

Excerpt:

Stifling a yawn, Alanna was just reaching behind her to undo the zipper on her gown when she heard a loud thud out in the living room. Startled, she froze, listening, but everything was quiet.

Chewing on her lower lip, she stared at her bedroom door, wondering if she should investigate. But knowing she would never be able to sleep if she didn’t, she opened the door and cautiously looked out.

Though she had a clear view of the living room from where she was standing, she couldn’t see much in the dark. Which meant that she would have to go out there, she realized. Taking a deep breath, she slowly tiptoed into the living room.

Running her hand along the wall, she found the switch and flipped it on, only to stop in her tracks when light illuminated the room. There, sprawled in the middle of her living room floor was a man dressed in a pirate costume.

Why hadn’t he left with all the other guests? she wondered. He must have been in the bathroom, she thought. But that still didn’t explain why he was lying on her living room floor. Oh God, the drunk had passed out, she thought. Well, that wasn’t her problem. He sure as heck wasn’t staying on her living room floor all night.

Chewing on her lower lip, Alanna knelt down beside the man. Leaning forward, she turned her head so that her ear was right above his mouth, and then sighed with relief when she felt his warm breath against her skin.

Okay, so he wasn’t dead, she thought. That was a relief. She leaned closer to his face and noticed that he didn’t smell like he’d been drinking at all. That was strange, considering he was passed out on her floor. Her brow furrowing, she put her hand on his shoulder to nudge him when his eyes flew open.

For a moment, Alanna just knelt there, lost in those incredibly golden brown eyes of his. God, they were sexy, she thought.

He studied her in silence, then his eyes widened and he was scrambling away from her. Quicker than she would have thought possible, he was on his feet, his hand on the hilt of his sword as he looked around wildly.

“Where am I?” he demanded, his eyes narrowing as they came to rest on her. “What have you done to me, witch?”

But the guy insisted on still playing the pirate, and when she failed to answer his outlandish questions immediately, he took what he probably thought was a menacing step toward her. If he thought she was going to be intimidated by his size or his make-believe glower, however, then he didn’t know her at all. She was in no mood to play games. She was exhausted and wanted to go to bed.

He studied her for a moment, his golden eyes seeming to penetrate her blue ones. When she didn’t make a move to resist, he began to relax his hold on her. That was all the incentive she needed. Wishing she had finished those self-defense classes she’d started, she did the only thing she could think of. She jerked away from him and slapped him across the face as hard as she could.

Alanna had hoped to startle him enough so she could make a run for the bedroom. Once there, she could lock the door and call the cops.

But, swearing under his breath, the man slammed the sword back home.

What the hell do you think you’re doing?” she demanded, craning her neck to look at him over her shoulder.
